Others say it made them suicidal. It is always a gut-wrenching decision to use drugs But thank you, Stefan Lay, for giving people like myself many reasons to seriously think this over. I wish you well. Accutane changed my life, for better.

I have been battling with acne since I was Now I am in my late 30s. I started taking Accutane in my mid 20s and I wish I knew about them before.

Every years I take appropriate amount of milligrams over months and I have never had any problems. My skin is flawless for about 2 years after the treatment and then acne slowly start coming back. No one should get discouraged just because someone had bad experience. If you're thinking about taking Accutane, or any other acne drug, definitely read this book first.

However, this book doesn't just apply to Accutane. The information in this book can be applied to almost every medication on the market. Doctors prescribe medication and then downplay the side effects or don't even mention some side effects at all.

Don't be fooled into thinking the drugs are there to cure your acne or health problems They aren't. The drugs are there to make MONEY and there is little repercussion for the pharmaceucital companies if your health is destroyed in the process. Besides, even if someone did win a lawsuit against a drug, the drug company has enough money to pay them off with a handsome lump sum. I'm not against modern medicine or doctors and surgeons, but the message to take from this book is how important it is to research before taking any medication.

Know the real use for the drug medications are used for one thing and then marketed for another because they sell better that way and the potential side effects. Never blindly take a drug because a doctor prescribes it as a "last resort". Finally, this book makes you realize that severe side effects can happen to anyone. Everyone thinks it won't happen to them until it does.

The consequences can be devastating. Even if Stefan's health improves, it probably won't ever be as good as it was before he took Accutane.

He'll have to manage the side effects for the rest of his life. Taking Accutane is my single biggest regret in my life! This drug has ruined me and the person that I used to be.

I started watching your videos when I began experiencing the side effects after taking accutane. They began to accumulate about 2 months after taking it and then it was was just a snowball effect after that getting worse and worse as time went by. It seems that no one understands what us sufferers are going through, the doctors, our parents, our friends. Whenever you try to confide to them about it and how accutane caused it, you get left with the same answer, "it's just in your head".

Probably sounds familiar huh? We need more awareness about this and this book is a start which is why I gave it five stars. Need customer service? Click here. I have no residual effects from the medication, and all of my deep acne scars have gone away, too. For me, the biggest side effects I dealt with were an extremely dry nose and lips, and I had large patches of cracked and scaly skin. But all of it started to go away within a few weeks after I finished the medication.

As Dr. Gohara said, very few five percent, if she had to guess of her patients go on Accutane a second time, while the vast majority never see a major breakout again. Again, your results will vary, but rest assured most patients see life-changing improvements with a course of isotretinoin. Kali Kushner myfacestory. The bumps under my skin were so large and sore that I ended up going on 60mg of Accutane in Throughout my six-month dose, everything was dry—my eyes, the insides of my nose to the point of occasional nosebleeds —and my joints were super stiff and achy, especially in the morning and at night.

Even bending down and picking something up was harder on Accutane; I had to move slower because of how stiff I felt. A post shared by Kali acne neutrality myfacestory. Thankfully, all of my side effects ended quickly, just a few weeks after I stopped taking the pill, but my acne started to come back six months later.

In the end, I decided not to go on another dose of Accutane, though, since my acne is so hormonally driven that I feel like it wouldn't have helped.

Gohara and many others disagrees. Jamie Grace Adams jamiegrace. The best way I could describe my skin prior to isotretinoin is There was a period of at least five years where I don't remember waking up without my face hurting. I actually got fired from a job at a beauty counter in college because the manager thought I made a bad impression on customers because of how my skin looked. Accutane ended up working really quickly and really successfully on my acne, but I also had virtually every side effect—the most annoying of which was the dry skin.

I needed to apply lotion to my face, hands, and body all the time, and I dealt with horrible joint pain, especially in my hips. Within six months, my acne cleared up, and my dermatologist decided I no longer needed to take isotretinoin. All of my side effects disappeared within a month, except for the depression.

I was so self conscious about my skin that I used to hide in the bathroom and cry. I truly believe that Accutane was the only viable treatment for my cystic acne.

According to Dr. Nazarian, less than one percent of her patients experience mental health symptoms while on isotretinoin. As for Dr. United States. Celebs Style Beauty Lifestyle Shopping. And 4 out of 5 people find symptom relief with a course of Accutane. The drug carries risks of some serious side effects, especially when used alongside certain other medical conditions or before pregnancy. Accutane is sometimes the only thing that can clear up severe acne, which can also have serious side effects like facial scarring, skin infection, reduced self-esteem, social isolation, and depression.

So, is Accutane worth it? Technically, only you and your dermatologist can decide that, but we think we can help you along the way. Accutane is the former prescription drug brand name for isotretinoin, a vitamin A derivative often used to treat severe acne isotretinoin is now sold under the generic names Zenatane, Absorica, Myorisan, Claravis, and Amnesteem instead. In addition to reducing the amount of acne-causing sebum on your skin, Accutane also reduces bacteria on the skin, clears clogged poresand reduces inflammation, according to the American Academy of Dermatology AAD.

You heard him. Typically, Accutane is reserved for people with nodulocystic acne, a severe form of inflammatory acne that consists of nodules and cysts hence the name and often leads to scarring. So, not your average zit. But some dermatologists will also prescribe it for more moderate cases of inflammatory acne. Traditional therapies can fail if any type of acne becomes treatment-resistant to antibiotics over time. At that point, a prescription medication like Accutane is the only thing that will help.

Because of the side effect profile and the fact that anyone taking Accutane has to be monitored with frequent lab work, it tends to only be worth it for people with moderate to severe acne, says Shah. Additionally, some people should or even need to avoid using Accutane, says Palm. This includes:. As far as people with other existing skin conditions like rosacea and psoriasisusing Accutane is case-dependent. According to a studyAccutane has been shown to effectively treat moderate to severe acne in people who have rosacea and psoriasis.

Other studies even suggest that isotretinoin treatment may help treat papulopustular rosacea and pustular-type psoriasis. Taking Accutane can cause some pretty serious side effects, so you and your derm will work closely together to make sure everything is A-OK. Side effects are monitored through a computer-based risk management system called iPledgewhich requires physicians to confirm that their patients are taking Accutane as prescribed and are not having serious side effects, Shah explains.

It sounds scary, we know. But this is all put into place to help your doctor ensure that Accutane is not causing any serious or harmful side effects.

Isotretinoin is effectively high doses of vitamin A, which is fat-soluble. That means your bod stores any excess vitamin A in your liver rather than peeing it all out. That also means that chronic, excessive, or sudden increased intake of vitamin A can be toxic, causing a condition called hypervitaminosis A.

Symptoms of hypervitaminosis A include increased intracranial pressure aka pseudotumor cerebridizziness, nausea, headaches, skin irritation, and bone and joint pain. If left unchecked, it can also cause a coma or even death.

Hypervitaminosis A is usually caused by supplemental vitamin A and retinoids, not your diet. Since isotretinoin works by decreasing the amount of oil in your skin, almost every single person will experience dry skinchapped lipsa dry nose to the point of nose bleedingand dry eyes or mouthdepending on the dosage given.

Other physical side effects might include:. Psychiatric side effects related to isotretinoin are controversial but include potential increased risk of:. Too much vitamin A can cause permanent harm to an unborn baby, so preventing pregnancy during treatment is a huge priority for people that can get pregnant.

They include miscarriage, premature birth, and birth defectsincluding malformations of the eye, skull, lungs, and heart. Unfortunately, these risks are not small: The miscarriage risk may be as high as 40 percent in pregnant people taking isotretinoin, and at least 35 percent of infants exposed to the drug in utero are born with birth defects of some kind, per the Organization of Teratology Information Specialists.

Palm recommends avoiding other acne-fighting products, like topical retinolalpha-hydroxy acids AHAsand beta-hydroxy acids BHAssince using these products in combination with Accutane can damage your skin barrier. You should also avoid taking vitamin A supplements, as we mentioned earlier, and tetracycline antibiotics like doxycycline. Using Accutane with tetracycline antibiotics can cause spinal fluid pressure in the brain to elevate in a condition called pseudotumor cerebriwhich can lead to vision loss.

Typically, a dermatologist will start you at 0. Research also shows that lower doses of isotretinoin can effectively treat acne with a lower risk of side effects. Still, you might need to take the medication for more than 4 or 5 months to ensure you receive enough of it to permanently resolve your symptoms and avoid relapse. Oral isotretinoin is very drying, so hydrating skin products should be the focus of your skin care routine instead of acne-fighting ingredientswhich can cause extra irritation.

You should focus on hydrating lots of H 2 O in general and wear plenty of sunscreen SPF 30 or higher! Caren CampbellMD, a San Francisco-based dermatologist, also says some supplements can help relieve certain side effects.

Shah says your lipid levels and liver function will usually be checked at the start of therapy and then at least every 1 to 2 months during treatment, depending on your dermatologist. And because of the risks associated with getting pregnant, peeps who can get pregnant will need extra tests.

Per the AAD, most doctors prescribe Accutane for 4 to 5 monthsthough you might need slightly more or less time depending on how severe your acne is. The good news? I can control my acne with a simple cleanser now vs. The primary reason I started Accutane was for acne on my back, though I also had milder acne on my face. My skin is clear now and I feel way more confident. I still am on tazorac gel and duac cream, but my acne is so controlled. Many people will tell you that eating certain foods will cause acne, and there may be some truth to those rumors.

Still, more research is needed before derms will start recommending major dietary changes to peeps with acne. Twenty-eight days is about the length of time it takes for the outer layer of skin to regenerate. It really depends on your overall health.

Usually, doctors prescribe Accutane for 4 to 6 months, but some people need longer or shorter courses as Campbell told us, some people will need to repeat the course after treatment is complete. Make sure to tell your doctor ASAP about any changes to your overall health as well, including bowel movement changes, mood or mental health changes, and — of course — if you suspect you might have become pregnant.

As stated in comments on your YouTube videos, I was ONE day away from picking up my prescription of Accutane from the pharmacy when I decided to do some internet research on the drug; I am sooo glad I stumbled across your YouTube channel!

After watching all of your videos concerning Accutane, I honestly felt soooooo bad for you and the problems you now have because of this chemotherapy drug. It makes me sick that this had to happen to you. I, myself, believe in nature being the source for finding cures also I am also a Christian and believe we have more than enough resources out there because a smart God put it all together so I was very cautious after being prescribed this drug, which brings me to a funny point: your story fits my story to a friggin T my friend.

I started on topical antibiotics, worked for a while but the acne came back; next took oral antibiotics, worked for a while but it all came back; finally, I went to an actual dermatologist my normal doctor was prescribing me all these and sure enough, the first thing she said without even looking at my previous try-and-fails I think was "Accutane. The boy needs Accutane. It was like I was stupid for not using it before. My acne is also exactly how you described how yours was 6 years ago And then I find you and your story.

I was so mad when I couldn't read your book because all I had was a Nook, but I finally went so far as to download the Kindle app for my iPod touch and read it all the way to chapter 6 and finished the "Conclusion" chapter in the morning.

All the stuff that you have to deal with now For anybody reading this review besides Stefan, let me say this man is going through hell because of a drug that was meant to kill cancer. Also, let me say what this book has done for me: 1. I now know that there are things much worse than acne Drugs are NOT the answer!

I want to be healthier overall; I want to eat more natural and use more natural cosmetics 3. If I had gone through with taking Accutane, without researching it, and somehow didn't have side-effects, they certainly could get obscure side-effects if they were to take it. I can see myself telling them "I took it when I was younger and I'm fine".

I now have the wisdom to know the difference. In conclusion, thank you my very British friend for doing this for me. You could have saved me from years of problems. If you're ever feeling like there's no hope, I would be more than willing to talk to you message Aingu5 on YouTube , and remember: you ARE making a difference in people's lives by sharing this truth. I am now a faithfull subscriber to your channel and hope to become internet friends with you hahaha!

If you want Peace, Angus Beefcakes my internet alias. One person found this helpful. Top critical review. I am sure that Stefan believes that all of his problems come from taking Accutane but I think he is a little too focused on what is wrong with him and not focused enough on living life.

I do believe that Accutane is a bad drug that should not be prescribed for acne. To me it defies logic that a cancer drug would be prescribed for acne.

All cancer drugs have tons of side effects and acne is not life threatening. I do sympathize with those who have bad acne as I did when I was younger but t a cancer drug seems to be taking things a bit far. Sort by. Top reviews Most recent Top reviews. Filter by. I can only say I wish I'd seen and read this book earlier, before it was too late. I took accutane in , when recent "research" "proved" no link between accutane and IBD -- I was told all the "myths" were nothing more than mere rumors and fear-mongering.

I trusted my doctor, and it was the biggest regret of my entire life. Accutane absolutely devastated my health. I wish I had seen what Stephan wrote and spoke about accutane, but my doctor told me to trust him and to not go digging around the internet for baseless rumors.

Stephan is a true pioneer in speaking out about accutane. Up until , there were basically no victims publicly speaking out about the permanent devastating effects on national television, as Stephan did if only I saw it on time. For decades, the damage caused by this drug has been downplayed, gaslighted, dismissed, and covered up in an absolutely criminal fashion. Nobody was brave enough to come out and speak about what accutane did to them. Stephan was truly one of the first to write a book, air on television, and speak on the media.

Please, if you are thinking of taking accutane, listen to Stephan. Imagine what it would be like to be a 16 year old child who trusts their doctor and has absolutely no idea what kind of devastating impact this poison could have on the rest of your life. Stephan is speaking out to save your life - do yourself a favor and listen to him.

There are multiple facebook groups, as seen in the images posted, for victims of this horrific drug. If you've been hurt, you can find us there. By Shelly En on July 24, Images in this review. The new ebook Roaccutane: The Truth, by Stefan Lay of Norwich, United Kingdom, offers an honest and informative view from a patient's or should we say victim?

Stefan writes clearly and informatively about his own situation, which sadly is paralleled by many other people. Given Roaccutane for acne that had not proceeded to the stage of potentially scarring cystic acne, he was initially eager to get rid of his acne at whatever cost. In retrospect he realizes that he would have been better off to have stayed away from this potentially toxic drug, which he points out is used to treat cancer, and is therefore a chemotherapy agent.

He describes his research and personal experience with depression, suicidality, dry eyes, sexual dysfunction, bowel disease, and liver damage. I recommend this book for someone who wants to validate their own experiences with the drug or to get a quick overview of side effects, which unfortunately the medical community has failed miserably to provide information about.

He also has some entertaining and informative videos on Youtube you can view here. Hi stefan, just wanted to let you know that I'm literally scheduled to start accutane in a few weeks. My dermo appointment was yesterday, where they drew my blood and warned me about possible birth defects if I were to get pregnant, etc. Because of your videos, I decided to buy your book tonight. I read it beginning to end and have decided not to take accutane.

Just wanted to say thank you. Interesting account of your experience. Could relate to some of it. Hopefully something will come our way one day that will clearly be the healing agent. God bless you. I appreciate the efforts this author is making to assist consumers in making a well-informed decision.

Accutane is a very powerful, toxic drug that has potential side effects which can be life-altering. As a mother of two teenagers with acne, and as a high-school teacher, I can tell you that acne can ruin a young person's life. It destroys self-confidence, it can foster anti-social behaviour, it can lead to depression and suicidal thoughts. The world of a suffering teen becomes very small and very sad.

Academic performance is affected, school functions are avoided, and I have noticed that teenagers in high school who are found hanging around the smoke-pit dressed in black and wearing a permanent frown, often suffer from severe acne. I do not believe this to be a coincidence. Meanwhile, the happy cheerleaders typically have clear, peaches and cream complexions.
